I get most of my DD/NR questions answered very kindly by Mark Tinley who I'm sort-of-friends with, who worked with DD closely through much of the 90s and some of the '00s. I'll admit though their first 3 albums and So Red The Rose (Arcadia) are my favourite DD albums, With Astronaut and Notorious vying for 5th position. Ordinary World (and 'the wedding album') in the early 90s was kind of DD's comeback song, but really they had never been away it's just since Notorious their profile had been getting smaller and smaller and hit an all time low with the album 'Liberty' (which imo is one of their worst albums even though it had a couple of their best songs on like 'My Antartica'). Meddazzaland (mid/late 90s) was one of their best 'post fab five' albums. DD released a lot of good stuff in the 90s (and some of their worst too). Having said that, no-one would think DD were a '90s band, would they?ĭepends on if you are a fan or not. Goodness, was it really? My grammar is fine but my memory for dates is shot to h**l Songs with beautiful choruses were really in fashion in the '80s.Įxcept that it was the early nineties when 'Ordinary World' was released.

Thanks a million once again - very interesting insight - and it will certainyl push me to 'up the aunti' when thinking about how to use my hardware more creatively. But it worked incredibly well and Nick Rhodes reminds me of it - his efforts on that one sound on Ordinary World are equally insightful and creative. I thought is was incredibly creative - it would never have occurred to me to use 5 CS80 Ring-Modulated lines for such a passing, subtle moment. At one point, just to underscore a tender dramatic moment, the composer layered no fewer than five separate performances of a solo line with ring modulation affected slightly differently in real time on each take - just to get the 'moment' right.

I was involved in the production of a TV drama quite recently (sound design) where the composer used my CS80. Very, very creative and reinforces the idea that you often have to go to quite extraordinary lengths to achieve even apparently quite singular sonic moments. Many would not be so generous with providing such insight.Īctually - it's quite amazing just how much effort and how many synthesizers were used just for that one sound which features for perhaps 30second in the song. Please also thank Nick Rhodes for his time and insight - it's really appreciated. I made the original post / request (lost when when down last week) - I was wondering what amazing synth sound featured at around 3min 18 sec on the song "Ordinary World".įirstly - thank you Cumulus - and your wife - most sincerely, for this.
